Choose A Filter For The Aquarium

Choose a filter for the aquarium

Each aquarium is a unique and mysterious corner of the underwater world that everyone can create at home. It is proved that the aquarium has a beneficial effect on human health, in particular on the psyche and eyesight. To keep your underwater world free of mud, and the fish are healthy, you need to regularly take care of the aquarium. And the main role in creating and maintaining the purity of water is assigned to the Fish Tank Filter.

It can be said that the filter is the most important piece of equipment necessary to maintain the ideal state of the aquarium. The filter not only purifies water from particles of debris and biological waste, but also enriches it with oxygen.

Fitr sponge – the most common filler

One of the most common fillers for a filter is a sponge or simply a sponge. It can be used both independently and in combination with other types of fillers, for example, with activated carbon, which is placed in a separate compartment. This type of filler can be used to purify water from medicines used to treat fish.

Internal filter

At home, for small-sized aquariums, it is convenient to use an internal filter (immersion filter), which is attached to the wall of the aquarium from the inside using suction cups. Such filters are simple, convenient and, not least, reliable in operation. You can be calm and for the inhabitants of the aquarium and for yourself.

The design of the filter eliminates the ingress of water to the conductive elements. The scope of application of internal filters – aquariums up to 200 liters. For effective cleaning and filtering large volumes, you will have to purchase a model of very large sizes, which is not always convenient, therefore external filters are recommended for large aquariums.

External filter

The external Fish Tank Filter (external filter) used to filter large volumes of water provides not only mechanical cleaning, but also chemical. They are installed outside and therefore save valuable space inside the aquarium, and are also easily removable for maintenance and cleaning. These filters can be used for aquariums up to 1000 liters. When purchasing an external filter, make sure that it is not very noisy when working.

Mounted filters

External mounted filters are installed on top of the aquarium. Water in these filters is supplied by a pump located inside the aquarium. Mounted filters are well suited for aquariums up to 300 liters, because they have an average performance.

Bottom filter

Bottom filters, as their name implies, are mounted at some distance from the bottom of the aquarium and are a plate with many water holes. Such filters are quite difficult to maintain, because for its cleaning it will be necessary to empty the entire aquarium. However, the difficulty of operation is more than compensated for by the effective purification of water provided by this type of filter.

It should be noted that regardless of the power of the purchased filter, periodically it is required to completely change the water in the aquarium and clean the filter itself. And the water needs to be changed more often, the smaller the volume of water in the aquarium. The frequency of cleaning the filter varies depending on the type of filter itself and the type of filter element. But as a rule, it is one week for the filler and one month for the filter mechanism.

Surely you have noticed that sometimes the water in the aquarium becomes cloudy. The reason for this, as a rule, is the replacement of water or the installation of a new filter. This phenomenon is explained by the fact that in the aquarium water with time, good bacteria multiply. Changes in the conditions caused by the change of water or filter violates the formed biological environment. To quickly restore the balance of microorganisms, you can specially populate them in the water by adding certain drugs. After some time, the water will come back to normal.

Some recommendations for the selection and operation of Fish Tank Filters:

The required filter capacity is determined by the formula: 5 volumes of fluid per hour. That is, a filter that permits 250 l / h is required for 50 liters of water.

If the filter is mounted on suction cups, then it can sink deep into the water and stop driving air, so it is better to have an additional compressor.

Do not turn off the filter for more than 30 minutes, as during this time colonies of good bacteria on the sponge may die.

  • Rinse the sponge in water drained from the aquarium, do not use running water.
