It would seem that the fish – the most innocuous pets, and grow their task is quite simple. But in practice, this is not at all the case.
In order for the fish and other animals not to die, we need at least high-quality food, adequate lighting, regular cleaning of the aquarium and, of course, water filtration. All these tasks fall on the shoulders of the owner, who must regularly perform all these procedures.
Fish Tank Filter is a mandatory attribute of modern aquariums. Without it, life is possible only with a large number of living plants. Filters have two main parts. The first is a water pumping pump, the second is a cartridge with a filtering material.
Internal filters are installed in the aquarium itself, external ones are mounted outside, connected to the aquarium with hoses. The second type of device is more powerful, so their use is rational if you have a large aquarium.
The main task of this device is mechanical water purification, elimination of residues of life activity of the inhabitants of the aquarium, as well as mixing water and enriching it with oxygen.
If the device is correctly installed, the lower and upper layers of the water will constantly mix, improving the gas exchange of water and air in the room.
The top layer of water separates with carbon dioxide and sinks down, as a result, the fish will not accumulate at the surface, but will be distributed evenly in the water.
It will not be superfluous to equip the outlet pipe with a special pipe under the air intake mesh. It creates small air bubbles, providing effective aeration.
Filtration is delayed during filtration. When the filter becomes clogged, the filter must be gently rinsed, but strictly without using detergents.
Does the aquarium need an external filter, what are its pros and cons
External filter lovers of aquariums are often called "bucket". Install it near the aquarium or in the cabinet under it. In view of the larger size, it can accommodate more filter material. The result is better water purification.
Most models of external filters are mixed and have two filtration sections. The first is mechanical with a synthetic winterizer or sponge for collecting dirt, the second is a layer with biomaterial.
Filtration system for a large aquarium
Inside the device is divided into sections. The mechanical parts are placed on top, then the biomaterial layer is coal or ceramic granules. Additionally, you can also use other fillers to remove heavy metals or ammonia.
In expensive models even install a water heater to maintain a certain temperature.
External filters are bought for large aquariums, usually with a volume of 200 liters.
The advantages of external filters include the following:
- better filtering,
- more convenient cleaning and maintenance,
- cleaning in several stages: mechanical, biological, and also water softening due to additional fillers.
Of the drawbacks, it is worth noting only the higher cost, which is justified by a completely different level of purification, as well as extensive additional features, for example, by installing various additional fillers to remove certain chemicals from the water.
When choosing this device you should pay attention to the following recommendations:
- for a small aquarium, you can take a device of small size, but high-quality and quiet,
- a capacity of 30 l / h will be sufficient for aquariums of 30-70 liters,
- aquariums of 100–200 liters need a filter with a flow rate of 500 l / h,
- with an aquarium volume of more than 200 liters, this figure should be at least 700 l / h.
Why do we need coal in the filter for the aquarium
Disputes about whether coal should be used in filters have not subsided for a long time. Someone uses it constantly or periodically, someone does not use it at all.
Fish Tank Filter Charcoal It has a particularly porous structure, thanks to which it absorbs chemical substances. This is used to clean both air and water.
For aquariums you can not use the coal that is sold in pharmacies, it quickly turns to dust and does not perform its function.
Most often use bituminous and in addition granulated. It absorbs chlorine, tannins, floramines, toxins, but unfortunately, it is completely unarmed before nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, heavy metals, and phosphates. To remove them will require additional filler.
The ability of coal to absorb harmful substances is directly affected by pore size. Coal particles should be 1-2 mm in size, not shiny and hard.
Dose and duration of use of coal depends on the characteristics and size. For a 50-liter aquarium, one cup of charcoal is usually used, replaced once a month. For more convenient use and replacement, it is better to put coal in a separate bag.
It is worth noting such an important feature of coal as the absorption of drugs from water after treatment of fish. If medication is planned to be added to the water, the coal must be removed beforehand, and returned back after treatment.
Do I need to turn off the filter in the aquarium at night
Many novice aquarists are wondering Do I need to turn off the filter in the aquarium, for example, at night, or it should work continuously.
Experts confidently answer – in no case should the device be disconnected. In the filter live colonies of bacteria that carry out biological water purification, and they do not die only on condition of constant supply of oxygen-enriched water.
Shortly after the filter is turned off, they will die, and after it is turned on, the water will be poisoned and the fish will die.
The flow of air into the water should be regular regardless of the time of day. The only exceptions are aquariums with an abundance of plants, they can even do without artificial aeration.
