External Filter In The Aquarium

How to choose an external filter for the aquarium

If you decide to prepare the ground for the aquarium yourself, choose dark gravel or gray alluvial sand of transparent rivers and streams. Both basalt crushed stone and gravel of volcanic rocks, which gradually give up microelements useful for plant growth, will be suitable.

Please note: the size of the soil grains plays an important role. Since the waste between fish’s activity gets into the space between them, the ground will have to ensure free circulation of water between its particles (their diameter is from 2 to 5 mm).

Rinse the gray river sand (the grain should be 2-4 mm in diameter) so that the water eventually becomes clear. Put them at the bottom of the aquarium with a layer of at least 5 cm. If possible, put pieces of peat and clay near the roots of the plants to feed them.

For a soft water aquarium, wash the sand in 30-40% hydrochloric acid, preheating it. Stir this composition until the release of gas bubbles temporarily stops. Then rinse lightly with water. Put the resulting soil in the aquarium.

Rinse river sand (1.5-2 mm in diameter) or gravel (3-4 mm diameter). Wait until the water becomes clear. After that, boil the mixture for 15 minutes, stirring continuously. Rinse in warm water again. The thickness of the soil layer in this case will depend on the plant species and the size of the aquarium, but usually not more than 3-7 cm.

Since fish waste gradually accumulates in the aquarium soil and can gradually rot the roots of plants, it should be renewed every 2-5 years. The frequency of replacement depends on the volume of plants, the number of fish and its composition.

External filter for aquarium. Device and selection rules

Any aquarist should clearly understand that an aquarium is a very small artificial reservoir in which all processes take place instantly. Given the fact that even experienced aquarists with experience manage to overpower their aquarium, without the use of a good external filter, there can be no question of normal biological filtration in an aquarium. So, if you do not want your aquarium inhabitants to suffer from an excess of ammonia and nitrite, then I advise you to read this article to the end. From it you will learn about the device external filters for the aquarium, the rules for their selection, as well as some pros and cons of use.

Types of water filtration

1. Mechanical filtration

The essence of mechanical filtration is that the filtering mechanism purifies the water in the aquarium from small particles of mechanical suspension. By mechanical suspension in an aquarium, they usually refer to the remains of feed, fish excrement and other mechanical particles that are present to some extent in the water poured into the aquarium. Mechanical filters are usually suitable for small aquariums up to 70 liters. The device of such filters is usually simple: a motor and a sponge. Aquarium water, passing through the sponge, is cleared of various types of suspended matter.

2. Chemical filtration

The essence of chemical filtration of aquarium water is that water is purified at the chemical level with the help of an absorbent. The brightest and simplest example of a filler for a filter that performs the function of chemical filtration is all known coal. Zeolite is also very popular. The various absorbents used in chemical filtration can remove the three most harmful substances present in a given concentration in any aquarium — ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

3. Biological filtration

Every aquarist must know what biobalance in an aquarium is and what biological filtration is. After all, this is the most important and desired type of filtration by every aquarist. The essence of biological filtration is that the purification of water in an aquarium is carried out by living organisms — nitrifying aerobic bacteria — that settle in the biological filter filler. These bacteria decompose harmful ammonia to nitrite, and then the resulting nitrite to nitrate, which is used for the growth of aquarium plants. Porous materials are used as a filler for a biological filter, most often ceramics.

4. Combined filtering

Combined filtering involves the simultaneous purification of aquarium water at a biological, chemical and mechanical level.

Since biological filtering is a priority for any aquarist, this article will discuss further the external filters for the aquarium, since they are best able to cope with this role.

External Filter In The Aquarium

What is an external filter for aquarium

This filter is placed outside the aquarium, has the form of a small bucket or cup, from which two tubes extend, which descend into the aquarium. One tube pumps out dirty water from an aquarium, and the other pumps pumped purified water into an aquarium.

Advantages of an external filter for an aquarium

1. Large area of material for filtration. This allows you to ensure the maximum level of biological filtration due to the large number of aerobic nitrifying bacteria that settle on the sponge.

2. Combined filtering. The bucket of the external filter allows to accommodate various absorbent and filter materials, which turns the filter into a combined one.

3. Do not reduce the amount of water in the aquarium, but rather increase it. The hoses of the external filter and the filter bucket itself contain a certain amount of water, which is added to the total volume of water in the aquarium.

4. Shorter service life. External filters need to be cleaned less often, and it is much easier to do this, because you do not need to reach into the aquarium.

5. High service life (from two to eight years).

Disadvantages of the external filter for the aquarium

1. Great price. External filters are much more expensive than internal ones, but sometimes their use is more justified.

2. External filter takes up space. A bucket (or, as they often say, a canister) from an external filter needs to be put somewhere. Typically, these buckets are hidden in the cabinet under the aquarium, so this should not cause problems.

3. The probability of a flood. If improperly assembled and / or installed, the filter may leak, which will bring its owner a lot of inconvenience.

When should I start thinking about buying an external filter for an aquarium?

Of course, you can use an external filter for cans of 60 liters (do not forget to just take care that the fish do not suck in the hose from the filter), but it is recommended to use external filters in aquariums of 200 liters or more. For cans with a volume of 60 liters, the use of an external filter is recommended for overcrowding.

When buying an external filter for an aquarium, it is imperative to pay attention to the manufacturer’s recommendations on the volume of the aquarium for which the filter is intended. Considering the fact that modern external filters have many additional functions, such as water heating and its aeration, an ultraviolet nozzle, it’s not worth saving on the purchase of an external filter for an aquarium.

Filters external filter for aquarium

As a rule, the soup kit at the external filter for the aquarium includes the following filter materials:

1. Foam rubber or synthetic winterizer (two materials are possible at once)

3. Zeolite or coal

It should be remembered that coal is recommended to be used only at the stage of launching the aquarium, as over time it loses its absorbing properties. After a month and a half, the coal compartment should be replaced with ceramic or foam rubber.

How to choose an external filter for the aquarium

When choosing and buying an external filter for an aquarium, you need to know which key points you should pay attention to.

1. If you buy an external filter for an aquarium with a volume of up to 100 liters, then you should focus on the silent operation of the filter, since the external filter can cope with mechanical and biological filtration in any case.

2. For an aquarium up to 100 liters, the filter capacity should be approximately 300-500 liters per hour. This performance of the external filter for the aquarium is enough even if your aquarium is overpopulated, which happens very often. Your choice is Aquael MINI KANI 80, Tetra EX 600 Plus, EHEIM Ecco Pro 130.

3. For an aquarium over 100 liters, the performance of the external filter should be approximately 700 liters per hour. Your choice of Tetra EX 800 Plus, EHEIM Ecco Pro 200, Aquael MIDIKANI 800.

4. Touches canisters. The larger the volume of the canister, the greater the volume of the filter material. Water in this case will be cleaner, and its flow is more stable.

5. Number of trays. The greater the number of trays, the more the user of the external filter for the aquarium can experiment with different types of fillers. Prefer filters in which the number of compartments for fillers is not less than three or four.

6. The thickness of the hose. The rule here is better thicker than already. The fact is that with time inside the hose is covered with a bloom of algae and other suspended matter, which makes it difficult for the water to flow in the hose.

Summarizing, we can say that when choosing an external filter one should focus on three indicators: performance (in liters per hour), power consumption (in watts) and recommended volume of the aquarium (in liters).

When choosing an external filter for an aquarium with one or another pump power, do not forget to take into account the fact that a sponge takes up 10% of power, or even all of 20-25%, the remaining 30-50% of power will be taken up by the water rise in the aquarium if you install a filter aquarium in the cabinet

Cleaning the external filter for the aquarium

Cleaning the external filter consists in washing the filtering materials (ceramics, foam rubber) or replacing them (zeolite, coal), as well as cleaning the mechanical parts of the filter.

The procedure for cleaning an external filter for an aquarium is as follows.

2. Turn off the external filter from the power supply.

3. Shut off and disconnect the hoses.

4. Put the external filter in the basin, remove the cover and drain all the water.

5. We take out fillers and clean or replace them if necessary.

6. Open the rotor chamber and carefully clean the rotor from organic

7. Putting the filter. Do not forget before switching on to fill the external filter canister with water.

External filter for aquarium slang

I think it would not be superfluous to mention that external filters are often called external, canister or cassette.

How to properly place the filter materials in the external filter

When filling filter baskets with materials for filtering, you need to follow a simple rule. The essence of this rule is that before biological treatment, water must undergo mechanical cleaning.

In practice, this means the following: if the water flow in the filter goes from bottom to top, then there should be a sponge at the bottom, then ceramics or sintered glass should go, and at the very top you can place a synthetic winterizer for maximum water purification from suspended matter.

In my filter, for example, I use only a regular sponge and a sintered glass filler, eliminating synthetic winterizer in general (the water is already transparent).

Prefilter. What is it and do you need it

In most cases, the suction tube of the external filter does not have a sponge on it. To exclude the intake of fry of fish and large particles of dirt, manufacturers use various mechanisms such as a check valve (for example, in my exterior, the manufacturer uses a ball, which 1) narrows the water intake and 2) blocks the water flow in the absence of suction towards the filter basket.

To put a sponge on the suction tube or not, everyone decides for himself. Such a sponge on the inlet hose is called a prefilter. When using a prefilter, two tasks are solved: 1) the entry of the fry inside the exterior is excluded; 2) water at the entrance to the filter undergoes additional mechanical cleaning.

Brush for cleaning external filter hoses

Over time, the hoses of the external filter are overgrown with algae. In addition to the fact that it looks unaesthetic, during the first cleaning you will encounter the problem that the plaque damaged from the bends of the hoses during the cleaning will fall directly into the aquarium. But this is a solvable problem.

What is the catch of modern external Fish Tank Filters?

Modern aquaria in most cases can not do without filtering equipment, which provides the necessary water quality and minimizes the effort to care for the aquarium. To address these issues, manufacturers often advise using external canister filters, as the most advanced and convenient in daily use. Is it really?

What are the pros and cons of these devices:

Of the benefits can be noted:

– good filtration quality;

– the absence of foreign objects in the aquarium, except for the intake and exhaust pipes;

– the need for more rare maintenance;

As you can see, there are no minuses that would affect the quality of filtering in these devices. Manufacturers have learned how to effectively deal with the possible leakage of these devices with the help of modern materials, therefore, with proper user vigilance, they are minimized. However, the prices of these devices may differ significantly from the prices of the best internal filters. The difference sometimes reaches 10 times. Therefore, manufacturers are most profitable to sell these filters.

Also, having decided to purchase an external filter, it is worthwhile to attend to the issue of its placement, since devices of this type are very voluminous, so they are often hidden in a pedestal under an aquarium.

What is a modern external canister filter? This is a device that is installed outside the aquarium and consists of a body containing all filtering materials. In short, any external filter consists of a pump and compartments with filter materials. The pump is usually a motor pump that provides continuous movement of water.

Constructive arrangement of the motor pump:

– inside the main body;

– as a remote device and placed on the intake tube inside the aquarium;

More powerful filters use the internal arrangement of the pump. In this case, the water enters the canister by gravity, and is released into the aquarium by the pressure created by the pump. This provides a higher outlet pressure and allows water to be raised to a greater height. In addition, the location of the pump after the filter elements allows it to work with clean water and does not require frequent cleaning operations. This pump arrangement can be called classic, as it is used by many major manufacturers of aquarium equipment, such as Tetra, Eheim, Fluval and others.

External Filter In The Aquarium

Less powerful and productive models can use an internal arrangement of pumps. This solution has significant drawbacks:

– foreign element inside the aquarium

– the pump is installed before the filter elements, therefore it is quickly polluted and requires periodic maintenance.

The adherent of such a layout of its external filters adheres to the firm Aquael.

The effectiveness of the external filter affects a whole set of factors. We list them:

  1. Performance.
  2. The volume of filter elements.
  3. Filtering fillers.
  4. The number of trays for filter materials.
External Filter In The Aquarium

External Filter In The Aquarium

  1. Performance – is selected for a specific volume of the aquarium. When choosing a specific filter model, it is worth remembering that its value strongly depends on the installation option and the filter materials used, so you should have a certain margin.
  2. The volume of filter elements. Here everything is simple and operates according to the principle: the more the better. Of course, you should not neglect common sense and fasten a 20 liter canister to a 15 liter aquarium. But the main trend is this.
  3. Filtering fillers should be varied. This will provide a more complete removal of suspended and dissolved pollutants from the water. From this clause follows the requirements for clause 4.
  4. The number of trays for filtering materials should be sufficient so that you can organize a full and sufficient filtration. Usually their number ranges from 3 to 5. Preference should be given to models with a large number of them.

External canister filters are completed with hoses and tubes for organizing the intake and return of water to the aquarium. In addition, the kit often comes with a flute, which is designed to spray water over the surface of the aquarium. It is necessary to saturate the water with oxygen.

Manufacturers can complete their products with filter materials or sell without them, allowing the consumer to choose the necessary materials. The first option is most suitable for beginners and people who for some reason do not want to understand the intricacies of the selection of filter elements. The second option is most suitable for enthusiastic aquarists with experience. However, it is worth remembering that the use of too dense materials can greatly reduce the performance of the filter, which will adversely affect its efficiency.

Manufacturers often position their external filters as devices capable of performing all three types of filtration: mechanical, chemical and biological. Mechanical filtration is carried out by passing water through a porous filter element, chemical – through a chemically active or sorbing material. But contrary to the statements of manufacturers for the implementation of biological filtration conditions are created far from ideal. Biological filtration is most effective under conditions of active oxygen supply and low water flow rates, which is not observed in canister filters. Most closely to these conditions are suitable models in which a large volume of the body is combined with low productivity, however, such models are not carried out mechanically by the best way. The most effective in terms of biological filtration can be considered external semi-humid filters, which we will tell you about in a separate article.

In order to leave a comment on this article, you need to use the form at the bottom of the page.

Therefore, even acquiring an expensive external filter, you should not hope for a complete biological filtration from an external canister filter. However, it is worth mentioning that in terms of the efficiency of mechanical and chemical filtration, models with external execution bypass almost all internal models.

External Filter In The Aquarium

Hello, dear readers of the Aquarius Aqua-As Blog, I want to devote this article, to one of the main devices of the modern aquarium, to an external filter. I hope this article will be useful for both novice and experienced aquarists. Let’s talk about the device of the filter, the principle of its action, the fillers for it and of course, how to choose the optimal filter model for your aquarium.

In a modern aquarium, external filters have firmly taken their place. Previously, the external filter could only be seen by aquarists who were professionally engaged in fish breeding and very rarely by amateurs. At that time, airlift filters, usually operated by a compressor, were used, as well as mostly home-made hinged filters, or as they are called, filters, backpacks or waterfalls. I still remember my feelings when I was a ten-year-old kid, along with a plexiglass aquarium that had been seen, assembled on screws, got a mounted filter made by an aquarist; . By the way, that aquarium served me for about five years, neons felt great in it, gourams, echinodoruses and a number of plants grew barbs.

But time does not stand still, with the development of aquarism has changed the approach to the content of the aquarium. Increasingly began to use various technical devices. The composition of fish and plants contained in the aquarium has changed, many species demanding of water quality have appeared, and the density of fish landing has also increased. Accordingly, to help the aquarist, more and more sophisticated and technologically advanced devices began to appear. Of course, all these useful devices certainly make life easier for the aquarist and expand the possibilities for maintaining more demanding inhabitants of the aquarium. But all the same, it is necessary to strive to understand the essence of the natural processes occurring in the artificial pond, and not to rely only on the modern technical equipment of the aquarium. Technical means, this is help to the aquarist, but they will never replace the aquarist himself. There should not be such an attitude as I bought a cool external filter, set all the problems solved, such an attitude would rather lead to bigger problems than to success. I apologize for the slight lyrical digression.

External filter, device and principle of operation.

External, or as it is also called a canister filter, is a container, filter material is placed in it, it can be very diverse, we will talk about this a little later. The external filter is located next to the aquarium, most often in the cabinet under the aquarium. With the help of the canister, we provide the bacteria involved in the water filtration process with additional space and create conditions for their reproduction and effective work. Due to the fact that the canister is located quite large, we can outside the aquarium, unlike the internal filters, and the area of the substrate, for the settlement of beneficial bacteria will be much larger, respectively, the filter efficiency increases.

The principle of operation of the external filter is as follows. The intake tube, water from the aquarium through the hose enters the filter, using a motor (pump), is pumped into the tank (canister), passes through several layers of different filtering material and again through the hose, already cleaned is pumped back into the aquarium. The design of the external filter, depending on the brand and model of the manufacturer may be different, water may flow from the top down or vice versa, the meaning of the process does not change. As a rule, several baskets are provided in the filter canister, filter material is placed in them, although there are models in which baskets are not used, I fill the filler in special bags, a bright representative of this design is an ADA Superjet ES-600 external filter. By the way, pay attention to this filter, the motor (pump), is located on the lid, which is not a typical engineering solution, as a rule, the motor is located in the lid of the “head” of the filter.

Fillers for external filters.

External filter due to its design allows you to organize a multi-step cleaning of aquarium water. Mechanical water purification – removal of suspended particles from water, biological filtration – decomposition of hazardous, toxic substances accumulating in the aquarium, during the life of the inhabitants, to compounds safe for organisms. This process is called the nitrogen cycle, in this article we will not delve into the details, I will tell you in detail about this most important circulation in the aquarium in a separate article. Chemical filtration – removal of hazardous or unnecessary substances from water using special adsorbents. Depending on the specific tasks, it is possible to choose the fillers of the external filter so that the canister can be loaded with the filtering material as efficiently as possible.

For mechanical water purification in filters, sponges of various density and porosity are used; the finer the sponge cells, the smaller particles of dirt it will hold. Also use a synthetic winterizer to clean water from the smallest particles of dirt. If the presence of filter sponges is provided in the use of an external filter. It is advisable to place them in such a way, put a sponge with large cells in the first or second basket, then other fillers go, and from the top they put a synthetic foot for final, fine cleaning.

There is a huge amount of fillers for biological filtration, it can be ceramic rings, ceramic balls, and similar materials, sometimes claydite is used as a filler in homemade external filters. As a rule, they have a porous structure, their main task is to provide filtering areas with an area for colonization, this condition is necessary for the effective operation of the external filter. There are also ceramic rings, in which the surface is smooth and they do not have pores, the task of such a material is to break the flow of water entering the filter in order to ensure maximum, uniform distribution over the entire area of the filtering material. Such a substrate should be placed in the first basket of the filter.

Chemical filtration is provided using fillers such as activated carbon, zeolite, and ion exchange resins. Activated carbon has a highly porous microstructure, due to which it effectively removes (adsorbs) toxins, acids and trace elements. Most often, activated carbon is used in filters after treating fish in an aquarium. in order to remove the remnants of drugs from the aquarium water. Zeolites also due to their structure are powerful adsorbents.

From my filters, for example, I never use a synthetic winterizer, which delays small particles very quickly clogs up and requires replacement. Accordingly, it is much more often to have to open-close the filter, which leads to wear of its elements, in particular the sealing ring. In my opinion, to remove the suspension in the aquarium, you can simply put a pump with a fine sponge, although this is my personal opinion. Also, I do not use activated carbon in the external filter. When it is necessary to remove from the water, for example, the remaining drugs, after treating the fish, I put the coal in the waterfall filter and clean it after a few weeks. In any case, please note that activated carbon, unlike fillers intended for colonization by bacteria, requires periodic replacement. The term of coal use does not exceed four months, zeolites also require recovery.

Below is a video about the location of the filter elements in the external filter of the AQUAEL company, model Unimax 700, please note that this model of filter uses a UV lamp for additional sterilization of water in the aquarium.

How to choose an external filter. What to look for.

You should approach the selection of the external filter very carefully, the filter you buy, for a long time and all the time of operation it should work normally and fulfill its functions. Agree. very few people want to constantly run in search of spare parts or have trouble in case of leakage. Aquarium sites and forums constantly discuss issues related to external filters, their reliability, ease of use, quality and quantity of fillers, price, etc. After spending a certain amount of time, you can get a complete picture of a particular model and make your choice on the basis of this .

Each model of the external filter has its own technical characteristics, manufacturers indicate for what volume of the aquarium this filter is suitable. It should be noted here that the filter capacity, the amount of pumped water in liters per hour, can be specified for an empty filter, without fillers. It is clear that by loading the canister with filtering material, this figure will be less, and as time passes when the fillers become clogged and the hoses become overgrown, the power rating will be even lower. As for the sake of interest, I measured how much the external filter actually pumps. This is what happened, the Atman DF-1000 external filter works for me with the indicated capacity of 1500 l / h, in the newly launched aquarium with clean fillings, the filter pumped about 1000 – 1200 l / h, after three months of operation, this figure was already about 700-800 l / h. In any case, you should choose, if possible, with a certain margin, for example, you have an aquarium of 200 liters, you should buy a filter designed not for a 150-200 liter aquarium, but for a 200-350 liter.

The first connection is an external filter.

I think it makes no sense to describe in detail the process of connecting a canister filter since each specific model has its own nuances and if you follow the instructions, there should be no problems. I will only pay attention to the following common things. Before laying the fillers, rinse them with running water, the filter is much easier to run if it is pre-filled with water, rather than using the start (water booster) button. Check when installing the baskets, the order of their location, incorrectly installed baskets of the external filter, can lead to imbalance and incorrect operation. Hoses should be cut off only after fitting them at the place of permanent installation of the filter. The first time after the filter is turned on, it can make quite noisy noise, it will pass over time, as soon as the rest of the air comes out, you can shake the filter a little, as a rule it helps to get rid of it faster.

Maintenance and cleaning of the external filter.

The external filter, unlike the internal one, is rarely cleaned; a normally working filter is not touched for months, or even years. Periodically it is necessary to inspect the filter for leaks. If the time has come to clean the filter, you need to remember the main point, you should not rinse the filter media with running tap water, just rinse in the aquarium water, otherwise the colonies of beneficial filter bacteria will be destroyed and it will take time for their new settlement. The rotor axis of the filter also needs to be cleaned; debris is often wound up on it, which can interfere with the normal operation of the filter. The gasket between the filter housing and the “head” of the filter should be lubricated with a special gel and periodically changed to a new one, this is one of the weakest points of the external filter. You should not often open the filter, and to carry out any manipulations with it, the principle must be established and forgotten, we only control its correct operation. Most leaks occur after interfering with the filter. It is convenient to clean the hoses and tubes with a special brush. True to the hero of the video, used to clean the hoses their fixture.

Well, that’s all that I wanted to tell in this article, I think to write a separate article on the most common external filter failures and ways to eliminate them.

And finally, another video on cleaning and maintaining my external Atman-DF 1000 filter, which has worked without cleaning for more than 11 months.

I hope you were interested in the article external filter, write your comments and questions in the comments, let’s try to figure it out together. All the best !
