Phyto-Filter – A Useful Solution For The Aquarium

Recently, many aquarists have used a newfangled invention – a phyto filter for water purification. The main role in it is played by indoor plants, the roots of which absorb harmful compounds from the water. This method has several advantages. Firstly, at the expense of plants, the aquarium acquires a larger decorative appearance, and, secondly, you save money on a regular filter. Interesting? Then read how to make a fito filter for an aquarium from indoor plants with your own hands.

What is phyto filtration and what is it for?

Properly made phytofilter for the aquarium with their own hands is much better than the traditional biofilter, the principle of which is aimed at the transformation of nitrogen compounds into nitrates. Due to this, the level of harmful nitrites and ammonia is reduced in water. The problem is that nitrates do not disintegrate by themselves, but systematically accumulate in the aquarium, being removed only when water is replaced. Their increased concentration can negatively affect not only the fish, but also the state of the water, and it is not always possible to correctly determine the cause of the problem.

Phytofilter acts quite differently. Nitrogen compounds are absorbed by the roots of plants without being converted to nitrates. Proper construction will be able to completely absorb ammonia and other compounds without accumulating them in water. Thus, nothing can harm water creatures.

The structure and work of phytofilter

This filter is best used in those aquariums, where there is no possibility of planting. As a rule, the reason for this may be the fish themselves, which tear up the substrate, which does not quite positively affect the plants. In the video from Sergey Ivanov, you will see how to make a fitfilter yourself.

On the contrary, in those aquariums, where there is already sufficient vegetation, the use of a fitfilter is not only meaningless, but also harmful. In this case, aquatic plants can be oppressed, which will affect not only the appearance of the aquarium, but also its inhabitants.

The main part of the phytofilter design is hydroponic installation, which is installed above the water surface. It contains moisture-loving plants, the roots of which are dipped directly into the aquarium. Due to the small pump and fittings, it is possible to arrange water circulation, which will allow to saturate it with oxygen, and make the substances contained in it more susceptible to the roots.

Selection of plants

It is extremely important to choose plants that are resistant to high humidity. It can be tsiperus, chlorophytum, spatiphylum, ficus, philodendron. All the nutrients for growth they will receive from the aquarium water, so your care for them is reduced only to the periodic wiping of the leaves.

Making the device with your own hands

In fact, a phyto filter with your own hands is very simple to make. The design drawing is not intricate, and it can be assembled in just an hour. If you already have suitable plants, the cost of construction will be penny.

The filter housing is made from a flower pot or a plastic container. As a substrate it is good to use expanded clay. Its layer must be at least 10 cm.
