What Are The Filters For Purifying Aquarium Water

Hello to all. I am glad to see you again on my blog devoted to aquaristics and I have prepared another material for you. I hope you read my last article about the types of water filtration and you liked it. Today I want to talk about water purification filters, which they happen to, decide on some features and so on. And so, let’s get started.

There are two ways to activate the filter – an electric pump and air flow, the so-called airlift. If you went to the market to choose your filter for the future of the aquarium, remember about one important point – the Fish Tank Filter should pump through from two to four volumes of the aquarium in an hour. I would like to mention the filters that regulate the flow of water. Due to this quality, such filters are considered more flexible in the settings and they are suitable for different aquariums and different types of fish. That is, this is a significant plus, which will help the aquarist to easily change aquariums and animals without extra costs. Aquarium equipment, especially good, as you know now is not cheap. Now at the moment there are two types of filters used by aquarists: external and internal.

External filters.

They are multisectional and have the form of a box with a certain number of compartments. All filter sections are responsible for different types of filtering. How effective is the external filter, you can judge by how much it is smaller than the aquarium. And now let’s look at several subspecies of external filters.

External suspended (falls) filter. This device has the form of a plastic box, which in turn is divided into several sections. This filter is placed outside the aquarium. This type of filter has two ways to supply water to the device. Either the water will flow into the filter directly from the aquas, then filter materials go and back to the jar. Or alternatively: the water is pumped out of the aqua pump, and then down the drain, which is higher than the water level back to the aqua.

Canister filters. Such filters have the form of a barrel, to which suction and discharge flexible hoses are suitable. By themselves, such filters are more spacious for filtering substrates. An electropump is installed on top of the filter. On a flexible hose, water from the aquarium enters the canister, then passes through sections with a filtering substrate and is discharged under the action of the pump back into the aquarium. The canister filter can perform all types of filtering, which I wrote about a little earlier.

Currently, there are samples of canister filters equipped with a water heater. There are filter options in which air is supplied to the filter compartment, which will better supply the colonies of nitrifying bacteria. If necessary, in addition to the external canister filter, you can install a flute, a nozzle, aerator or prefilter.

Internal filters

The so-called airlifts, are a fairly simple device, the principle of which is based on the rise of water through a special tube using air bubbles from the compressor. Such filters usually do not have large volumes, and large-scale aquariums are not suitable. I think if the volume of your aquarium is more than 250-300 liters, then you can not do without an outsider. Internal filters are of four types: "heads", glass type, bottom and internal biofilters. Let’s talk a little about each separately.

Bottom filters

Bottom filters have the form of a plate, or a set of plates, which are placed just above the bottom of the can. Then they are sprinkled on top of the soil, which leads to the formation of a special under-ground space. Using a flexible tube you create a circulation system, the movement of water in which will be carried out either by an electric pump or by airlift. For a novice aquarist, a filter of this format is not suitable for one simple reason. To clean it, you will need to start a global picking in the aquarium with agitating the soil. It is better to use it as an auxiliary device.

By this term, aquarists mean an electric centrifugal pump that is designed so that it can easily be connected to a filter system. Thanks to such pumps on the filters, the rate of water flow through the filter is regulated. These gizmos have sufficient relics, so it’s best not to use them in a small volume of water.

Internal biofilter

This is a special box, divided into several sections. Each section will be responsible for its kind of filtering. The effectiveness of such a filter will directly depend on the volume of your aquarium: the larger the aquarium and the weaker the filter, the worse the filtration quality will be, and vice versa.

Stack type filters

A plastic cup is attached to the electropomp in which there are small slots for the intake of aquarium water. Inside the case there is a filtering material, basically it is several cassettes with a foam sponge. If you want, you can replace it with activated carbon. There are some modifications of such devices, in which a compartment for coal filling is already provided for initially in the design.

When you have already chosen the appropriate unit, install it after reading the instructions in advance. Glue the inner one with the help of special suction cups on the back wall; external install in the cabinet and lay the suction and drain hoses. In the biofilter place the desired substrate. A good push for the development of a colony of nitrifying bacteria in your filter can serve as a piece of substrate from the filter from another active aquarium. Thanks to this you will quickly achieve the establishment of biological balance in a neglected aquarium. Do not forget to wash the filters, the signal is the weakening of the flow from the device. Do not turn off the filter for more than 1.5-2 hours, otherwise all bacteria will die. In general, it should always work, without breathing. An exception may be the time when you do a regular cleaning of the aquarium.

Well, on this for today I have everything. I am glad that you took a minute or two to read this article, I hope it was useful for you. See you soon, friends.
