What is airlift filtration of water for today? There was a period when air-lift filters – devices, the flow of water in which is provided by the air injected by the microcompressor – reigned supreme in the systems of aquarium water purification. Intrusively babbling, unproductive, not allowing the use of dense filtering materials, they nevertheless almost all past century helped Russian amateur fish farmers to maintain cleanliness in the aquarium.
The imperfection of the finished structures opened up a wide field of activity for creatively-minded craftsmen, and the specialized periodicals of those years willingly provided their pages with “Kulibin”, which sometimes offered very original designs of water treatment systems based on airlift. And advanced aquarists enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves to collect something and thereby ensure the amplification of the duct at least a dozen liters. After all, sometimes a filter in an aquarium with fry is simply necessary.

And then came the era of centrifugal pumps. Compact, elegant, powerful and noiseless, they suddenly broke all the performance records achieved by that time and ruthlessly forced out their clumsy predecessors from the use of aquarists and from the range of most of the flagships of the zoo.
It is possible to understand the logic of both consumers and manufacturers, but the airlift system can be considered as an undoubted rudiment — two. Indeed, in certain situations, the inherent flaws turn into virtues.
What is the air-lift filter for?
Take at least compact containers designed, for example, to contain spawning kartozubyh, small labyrinth, decorative invertebrates, etc. In this case, even a relatively low-powered pump filter can turn from a loyal assistant into a vicious enemy, creating an irrepressible whirlwind, causing the plants to flatten along the bottom, and fish or shrimp to be afraid to huddle around the corners. But even without filtration, such microaquariums should not be left. It is here that the airlift “slowness” will turn out to be just right: let it be at least fifty liters in total, but it will pass water through its guts hour by hour, aerating it and delaying the suspension.
And, of course, we must not forget about spawners. Installing a modern filter with a centrifugal pump in them will almost certainly cause a catastrophe: the excess flow will destroy the clutch, wash the eggs from the substrate, suck in and inevitably destroy the remaining larvae and fry. And again, the faithful worker will help us out – an air-lift filter, which not only helps to cope with dirt, but also creates a gentle, safe for young, water circulation.

But where to take this miracle-totavism, if the manufacturers of aquarium equipment refused it? Fortunately, not everyone showed similar myopia. Say, the company sera produces a whole line of air-lift filters, represented by three models, designed for use in aquariums of different capacities and with different biological load: sera Internal Filter L60, LI50 and L300 (photo 1).

Structurally, they are almost the same. Significant differences exist only in the form of sponges and their number. In the SERA Internal Filter L-60, the sponge is cylindrical, and in models I.-150 and L 300 it is already with a more complex profile and has the shape of a circular sector with a right central angle, which allows you to closely press the sponge to the glass and thereby eliminate the formation of cracks, in which older fry can get stuck. Moreover, in the older model of these sponges there are two, which implies the possibility of using the L-300 not only in spawning or aquariums for fry, but also in more spacious nursery aquariums with a solid amount of mechanical suspension.
The design of the filter is well thought out even in small things. Let’s look, for example, at the water inlet (photo 3): the rings surrounding it in several places not only reliably fix the filtering material, but also exclude the possibility of idle (bypassing the sponge) water flow, and the uniformity of its passage through the foam rubber provides abundant perforation .
The suction cups, with which the airlift is attached to the glass, are made of flexible, pliable plastic. On the one hand, they ensure reliable fixation of the device, and on the other hand, they make it easy to remove it from the aquarium. This is important, because for washing it is better to remove the entire structure: if you try to remove only the sponge, a significant part of the restraint will be returned to the water.

Airlift in L-series filters is two-knee, sliding, allowing servicing aquariums with a layer of water from 20 cm. Side air supply – through an additional tube with an external diameter under the standard hose from a microcompressor.
The thoughtful air lift configuration and optimized air supply to it provide high performance for this category of filters: even the youngest of these “three sisters”, being set to sing at a depth of 25 cm, can pump about 80 liters of water in an hour (note all almost silently). However, if such a pressure is excessive, you can easily reduce it (up to 1-2 l / h) by manipulating the amount of air pumped into the filter. Thanks to this, it is possible to create in the tank a current, firstly, sufficient for effective filtration and normal gas exchange, secondly, safe for the aquarium population, and thirdly (when it comes to spawning), necessary for training juvenile muscles. If you use other containers for other purposes, which filters are best suited for your tank to be decided only by you.
In short, if you want to keep your small aquariums clean and their inhabitants to ensure a healthy and comfortable existence, the sera internal air-lift filters are the best choice.
Airlift filter helped me a lot. At first I had a weak filter with motors, but it was still not convenient for the fry to swim. When I put the air-lift filter in the aquarium with fry – everything worked out. There is almost no flow and the fry grow well.
