How To Wash The Aquarium

How to wash the aquarium

An aquarium with clean water, various plants and fancy fish is a real decoration of an apartment, laboratory, office and any other room.

In order for the aquarium to please the eye, and not scare you with a terrible smell and the appearance of the "swamp", you need to properly care for it. The question is: “how to wash the aquarium?”

To care for yourself, your aquarium and aquarium fish will require: a bucket, a plain or special hose with a siphon attachment, a special glass scraper, and possibly a scissors for cutting the plants.

Before you start cleaning, you should thoroughly wash your hands, since the dirt on them may cause damage to the fish if it gets into the water.

We start with cleaning the filter. The filter turns off, gently gets and is transferred to a source of running water, for example, a bathroom or a kitchen. The sponge from the filter is thoroughly washed and placed back into the filter. After this simple manipulation filter can be returned back to the aquarium. It should be noted that once every 1.5-2 months the filter must be completely washed and cleaned of accumulated dirt and mucus. To do this, it is convenient to use a toothbrush and cotton swabs.

The process of the siphon of the soil itself does not differ from the usual water change, the hose is also used, only the cylinder mounted on its end is not just located above the ground, but is stuck into it. As soon as the water in the cylinder becomes transparent – it is stuck in the next section of soil. And so on until the bucket is full. At first, the water will leave too much, but do not worry, with practice, efficiency will increase. You can also remember where you stopped and start next week. It is much better than replacing a large amount of water at once. And by the way about the replacement. In the aquarium, you do not need to replace all the water at once, it’s enough from 15 to 25% per week (for the laziest, you can change 1/3 of the water per month), because it helps to maintain the desired microflora in the aquarium.

It is believed that before you pour water from the tap into the aquarium, you need to defend it from 2 to 7 days. This is a false delusion. Water can be safely poured directly, but if it is too cold to warm up to room temperature. Remember, hot tap water cannot be poured into an aquarium because there are too many chemical additives on the pipes for hot water. In extreme cases, to raise the temperature of the water, use boiled water from the kettle. It makes sense to defend water only with very strong chlorination, when a strong smell of chlorine emanates from water. And by the way, “whitish” water, which is often mistaken for strong chlorination, has nothing in common with chlorine, it’s just air bubbles whipped by strong pressure.

I hope, in this article, we were able to answer your question how to wash the aquarium. It is worth giving your aquarium a week an hour, and with experience this time will be reduced to half an hour so that it will delight you with its purity and beauty. As you can see, there is nothing complicated and time consuming in washing an aquarium.

How to clean the aquarium?

The first 1.5-2 months after the "start" of the aquarium, you need to feed the fish daily, observe their behavior, remove rotten leaves and food residues, monitor the appearance of algae in the aquarium and, if necessary, adjust the lighting. Also once a week add fresh water instead of evaporated water, but never replace it.

If you have correctly “launched” an aquarium, then after this time biological balance will be established in the aquarium. Your aquarium will have a beautiful look. By this time, the water in the aquarium from the tap turned into a “fish conditioned water”, or, as aquarists say, into “old” water. In the aquarium, it is absolutely transparent. If in the dark room to illuminate the front wall of the aquarium, it seems that the fish are hanging in the void. But in the white enameled basin, the “old water” will acquire a yellowish color. It is time for the first cleaning.

Need to start with cleaning glasses. It can be made with the help of special scrapers or ordinary razor blades, as well as with a nylon washcloth or sponge. Excellent effect gives the use of special kitchen sponges made of fiberglass. All electrical appliances must be turned off. If your plexiglass aquarium, then it is cleaned only with a sponge or nylon washcloth. Hardener materials cannot be used because they will leave scratches.

After cleaning the glasses, remove the rotted and yellowed leaves on the plants with scissors. If necessary, make a transplant of plants. If there are plants in the aquarium that form a bush (cryptocorynes, echinodorus …), then they should not be touched for 4-6 months after planting.

During these manipulations, no matter how hard you try, dregs will appear in the aquarium. Wait five to ten minutes for it to settle, and gently clean the plant leaves from suspended particles of organic matter with your fingers.

After that you can start cleaning the soil with a hose with a funnel at the end. There are many special tools available for this purpose, but if you want to save money, you can make it yourself. To do this, you need a flexible hose with a diameter of 10−15 mm and a regular watering can, which you fit on the end of the tube. Hose length should be thirty percent more than double the height of the aquarium.

The end of the hose with a watering can is lowered to the bottom, pressed to the ground and through the other end you suck in water (as drivers usually do when pouring gasoline), and send a stream of water to a pre-prepared bucket. A current of water rushes there. By rearranging the funnel around the plants, you remove excess organic matter and drain off some of the water.

An even better effect is given by using instead of a funnel “tedder” (plastic or aluminum tube with numerous holes 3-4 cm from the sealed conical end). With this simple fixture, you not only remove dirt from the ground surface, but also clean the soil from the inside, saturating it with fresh water. It is very useful for plant roots and significantly reduces the redox potential (redox potential). Thus, you prolong the life of your aquarium.

During this procedure, monitor the amount of drainage water. It should not exceed 1/5 of the total volume of the aquarium. I recommend to make a mark on the side wall. If you pour 1/5 of the water from the aquarium and lean over the surface of the remaining water in it, you can smell the fresh grass. This is the best indicator. The water in the aquarium should not smell like anything else.

After cleaning and draining the recommended amount of water in the aquarium, add fresh water. As a rule, it is recommended to add water to the pre-settled water, but my personal experience and the experience of the aquarists’ club led by me shows that water can be added directly from the tap. If the volume of topped up water is more than 1/5, then gases must be removed from it. For this water can be heated to 70 * C and cool to 40 * C, and then pour into the aquarium. Well, if there is a settled – then you can top up immediately. When you add water – substitute a palm under the stream.

Is water replacement required? There are a lot of arguments here, but the conclusion is one: it is obligatory. When changing water, the concentration of substances released by the fish decreases, which are not decomposed or “processed” by plants.

It should also be noted that for normal development, aquarium inhabitants should receive trace elements dissolved in water in necessary quantities. In natural waters, they are washed out of the ground rocks. In the aquarium, they can appear only with fresh water.

And in conclusion, I want to add that cleaning an aquarium with partial water changes in an established system should be done regularly – once a week. When the volume of the aquarium over 200 liters – once every two weeks, and in small aquariums (20−30 l) – sometimes twice a week. This is where the golden rule of aquarism affects: the volume of the aquarium is always inversely proportional to the cost of caring for it.

The walls of the aquarium also need cleaning. They can be divorced, mossy fibers, algae particles, food debris and other things. This, of course, is not very scary for the turtle, but there is no aesthetic component in this, especially since turtles themselves are hardly visible through such walls. The need to wash the glass of the aquarium depends entirely on the frequency of contamination. In this case, it is better to use a soft sponge.

The bottom of the aquarium also needs cleaning. Here all the sediment from the vital activity of aquatic creatures and food not eaten by them accumulates. A flexible hose with a narrow tip is used to remove all this debris. Also effective in this case is an aluminum or plastic tube with a cone-shaped tip, in which there are many holes for retaining small pebbles. Due to the difference in pressure, they work on the principle of a vacuum cleaner, sucking the dirt from the bottom of the soil.
